However, Ricardo Diogo, despite appreciating these relics that he knows so well, soon pursued the path of innovation, producing different Madeira Wines, oftentimes going against the flow. Nowadays, Barbeito produces modern wines, without ever forgetting the traditional techniques. The modernization has never stopped, mainly from 1991, when the Kinoshita family, friends of the company and its distributers in Japan since 1967, joined the company, investing on its modernization. From the 1992 harvest, they never stopped innovating and experiencing, leading the company towards success. In 2008, a modern winery was built, in the area of Câmara de Lobos, with cutting-edge technology, together with a traditional casks room for the wine aging. Simultaneously, the wines’ image was truly revolutionized, with modern, irreverent and often provoking labels, which have proven to be a great success.
But Barbeito never forgets the tradition of these great wines and, therefore, continues to prepare special batches subsequently presented on the market, once again with great success. Its work with the Tinta Negra variety, not always appreciated in the past, is remarkable, with quite surprising results. As Ricardo Diogo once said: “What I like the most about this grape variety is the fact that nobody likes it”. Always against the flow, leading a successful Madeira company, now also producing a still white wine, from the Verdelho variety, of the 2017 harvest. The success continues.
