Atlantic Festival

The Sixteenth Century Market recreates the historical period of the discovery of the archipelago and is held annually in Largo da Praça, right in the centre of Machico. This lively market aims to recreate past collective activities from the 16th century, where you can see various products, handicraft, food and beverage section, games, diverse entertainment and various exhibitions.

Music and fireworks come together harmoniously, marking the beginning and end of the Atlantic Festival. The opening fireworks show takes place on the 2nd of June, in Machico, next to the São Roque Chapel, in the surrounding maritime area. The Madeira International Fireworks Contest consists of three pyromusical shows on the first three Saturdays of June which can be seen along the bay of Funchal, during 20 minutes. This edition counts on the participation of pyrotechnic companies from three countries: France, Mexico and Switzerland. The objective is to attain the “Atlantic Trophy”, awarded by a jury. On the other hand, the “Madeira Belongs to All Trophy”, is awarded by public vote.

At this time, the weekends are more lively and inviting for outdoor activities. Therefore, over the month of June, from Friday to Sunday, you can enjoy a lively sunset in the garden beside Praça do Povo, where there will be much music, a nice atmosphere, and still, a gastronomy section with traditional Madeiran products.

A big screen with 3D effects will take the public on a journey through time and space. During 20 minutes and by using sound, light, theatrical smoke, video and fireworks, we will go back in time and watch the unfolding of the history of the Archipelago of Madeira.

This avant-garde performance, which takes place in Praça do Povo, besides the Pier of Funchal, arises from the fusion of dance with circus arts, in a magical time: the iconic Atlantic Festival.

This week is filled with various artistic performances which will transform Funchal City into a creativity area with diverse music, dance, singing, movement and cinematic presentations.

The Regional Bread Fair is an event organized by the Funchal Lions Club, for over 20 years. This event, which aims at raising funds for the club’s social projects, stands out for its entertainment programme which fills Praça do Povo with life and sound from the diverse daily performances by folclore groups.
