Civic and Cultural Centre of Santa Clara

The capital of the archipelago of Madeira has a cosmopolitan, European-inspired atmosphere, offering an agenda filled with events, cultural initiatives and things to do.

Surrounded by some of the city's historic buildings, such as the Santa Clara Convent and the Quinta das Cruzes Museum, the space called 'Universe of Memories of João Carlos Abreu' is a highly recommended visit for any art and culture lover. It is set up in a house dating from the late 19th century, located at Calçada do Pico, and keeps a valuable collection.

Here you can find all the assets donated to the Autonomous Region of Madeira by João Carlos Nunes Abreu who, besides being a journalist, writer, manager and hotel director, took on the role of Regional Secretary for Tourism and Culture. In this repository, visitors can appreciate a very diverse set of items collected from all over the world, with an emphasis on decorative arts, and take part in its various cultural and pedagogical initiatives.
