Our roads
Driving in Madeira is like travelling through a moving viewpoint, surrounded by unique landscapes. However, it’s important to follow a few basic rules.
Parking
- Parking spaces are marked with blue (paid) or white (free) lines. Be careful: white spaces marked with the letter 'M' are reserved for residents;
- Do not park on yellow lines, sharp bends, in front of driveways, on slopes, or anywhere that may block traffic or cause accidents;
- First come, first served. You cannot reserve parking spaces.
Safe driving
- Let your gearbox do the work
On descents, use lower gears instead of relying only on brakes. - The horn isn’t always provocation
A short beep can prevent accidents on sharp or blind curves. Let others know you’re there. - GPS doesn’t always know best – ask a local.
It may suggest impractical or steep roads. When in doubt, stick to main roads and ask for directions. - Courtesy saves time
On steep or narrow roads where only one car fits, vehicles going downhill have the right of way. Take precautions and make room whenever possible. - Your indicator speaks for you
Show other drivers your intentions. Signal in advance before changing direction or lanes. - Stay focused, avoid distractions
Driver distraction is a major cause of accidents. Keep your eyes on the road and hands on the wheel. Don’t look at or use your phone while driving. - Be mindful of conditions and speed
Madeira’s roads are beautiful but often narrow and winding. Adjust your speed to road and weather conditions. Drive carefully. - Courtesy on the road: a smile opens paths.
Madeira’s roads are for everyone. A friendly gesture or a smile makes all the difference - be a positive example!
