The apple of Madeira, commonly designated in Portuguese as “pêro”, is grown in various parts of Madeira. In Madeira islands there are several varieties of this fruit .
There are areas in Madeira with great potential for apple cultivation. There is a wide range of apple varieties introduced in the region, however the main regional varieties are "Barral", "Pêro Domingos", "Pêro Calhau", "Cara de Dama" and "Pêro da Ponta do Pargo".
In September the Apple Festival takes place, in the parish of Ponta do Pargo, sa tribute to this fruit. Several products are made from these apples, such as cakes, traditional confectioneries and cider - a traditional Madeiran drink that results from the fermentation of the “pêro” (apple).
