PR 1.3 - Vereda da Encumeada

Beginning near Pico Ruivo, the highest point of the archipelago, Vereda da Encumeada is 11.2 km long and follows the central mountain range of the island westwards until Encumeada.

Of moderate difficulty and with an estimated duration of six hours, this trail allows for direct contact with Nature in a perfect state of preservation.

Along Vereda da Encumeada, hikers will therefore cross two types of ecosystems, both included in the Natura 2000 Network.

One of them is the millenarian Laurissilva, whose surrounding scenery, characterised by a lively and green flora, leaves no one indifferent.

The other is the Central Mountain Massif, with its predominant volcanic escarpment.

Along the way you will also find several caves dug out of the rocks, such as Furna da Lapa da Cadela.

These were places of shelter for those who, in former times, walked along Vereda da Encumeada with the mission of cutting heather (broom heather - Erica platycodon subsp. maderincola and molar heather - Erica arborea) for piling, firewood or charcoal production.

As you approach Encumeada, at the end of Vereda da Encumeada, take some time to look out over the panoramic landscape that will make you feel like you are, in fact, in the centre of the island.
