Funchal Cable Car

Today, the Funchal Cable Car is one of the island's must-visit tourist attractions. This means of transport connects the centre of Funchal to the parish of Monte, offering the memorable experience of flying over the city and the mountain.

During the 20th century, the journey between Funchal and Monte was made by steam train. With the creation of the Funchal Cable Car, it became possible to make this trip in about 15 minutes, overcoming a drop of 560 metres. With a total of 39 cabins, it has the capacity to transport 800 people per hour.

Starting from Funchal Downtown, the steel cable extends over a distance of 3200 metres. The cable car starts by offering an aerial view over the urban fabric of the capital of Madeira. Gradually, the landscape becomes dominated by the characteristic green shades of this Atlantic pearl.

In addition to being a true viewpoint in motion, the Funchal Cable Car allows you to comfortably reach one of the most appreciated areas in the municipality of Funchal. Once in Monte, visitors can take the opportunity to discover its tropical gardens, its architectural heritage or experience the iconic basket sledges.
