The ‘Engenho da Calheta’ [Sugar Cane Mill], founded in 1901 and located in the municipality of Calheta, hosts an important museum presenting one of the oldest and important agricultural activities in the region, the sugar cane culture.

The Museum recreates the history of the factory and shows the transformation of sugar cane into honey and aguardente, displaying some industrial archaeological artefacts, namely parts of the mill from the 19th and 20th centuries.
Visitors can also watch a bilingual film played on the premises, with images of the production process of cane sugar (harvesting, transport, milling, fermentation, distillation and bottling of sweet aguardente).
