The east coast of the Island of Madeira is home to a large number of monuments worthy of a close visit. The building of Santa Cruz City Council is certainly one of them, presenting considerable value from a historical and architectural point of view.
The municipality of Santa Cruz represented a relevant role during the colonisation process of this pearl of the Atlantic. History tells us that the locality was christened in the 15th century, when the discoverer João Gonçalves Zarco found, among the dense trees that covered this area, old cedars with which he ordered a cross to be made.
The building where the Santa Cruz City Council is located dates back to the beginning of the 16th century, having undergone several expansion and renovation works, over time. Currently, it presents a residential, 16th-century and modern civil architecture.
Santa Cruz City Council, which can be found in the town centre, near the Mother Church and the Santa Casa da Misericórdia, stands out for some of its stylistic elements. This is the case of its twinned windows and its main door, topped by the coat of arms of D. Manuel, with a Gothic-Manueline style.
