São José Fort Viewpoint

Located at one end of the port of Funchal, the São José Fort Viewpoint offers visitors an unparalleled view over the amphitheatre of this European capital bathed by the Atlantic.

This fortress was built in the 18th century to protect the maritime entrance to the capital of Madeira. It is located at a strategic defence point where, according to history, João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira, the discoverers of Madeira, took shelter when they arrived on the island, which at the time was covered by dense vegetation.

These facilities, where you can currently find the São José Fort Viewpoint, initially served the mission of 'defending the port of Funchal, which played a key role in the island's trade. Later, they were occupied by British troops between 1801 and 1807. Today, in addition to its undeniable historical relevance, it is an area renowned for its scenic beauty.

The São José Fort Viewpoint, located on a rock formation known as São José Islet, has special landscape surroundings, offering a panorama where the sea and the city complement each other. Be sure to save some time to observe the arrival and departure of boats to and from the elegant port of Funchal.
