Popular Saints liven up Madeira and Porto Santo
In June the traditional popular Saints are celebrated and Madeira is no exception to this.
Celebrations start with Santo António [Saint Anthony] in his namesake parish where the night of June 12th and 13th sees a huge festival with a lot of colours, joy and activities, as well as the traditional parades.

Between the 23rd and the 25th of June, São João [Saint John] is honoured. This Saint is celebrated with great enthusiasm, mainly in the parish of São João and on the streets of Figueira Preta, Travessa dos Reis and Largo do Carmo where visitors will find typical Madeiran celebrations
São João is also celebrated on the island of Porto Santo and the celebrations in his honour sets the beginning of summer festivities on the island. There are many visitors who flock to the island at this time of year to participate in celebrations that include several socio-cultural activities, especially the traditional ‘popular parades’.

At the end of the month, on June 28th and 29th, celebrations are prepared for São Pedro [Saint Peter], with great pomp and circumstance, in Ribeira Brava. The village is decorated with paper flowers and other ornaments that are appropriate for that time of the year. Even the boats offering coastline trips of Ribeira Brava to party-goers are decorated, and there is a lot of music and partying throughout the night.
