Following the traces of an old trail used to connect the south and north areas of the island, Caminho do Norte is 3,2 km long and has an estimated duration of 1:30 hours, leading you to explore the lively Madeiran forest area.
Beginning at Boca da Encumeada, this trail was traditionally used by locals for trading between the southern and northern villages of the island, but also for participating in traditional pilgrimages.
The first part of Caminho do Norte goes through the indigenous Laurissilva forest, a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site.
Along this route of moderate difficulty, which runs on a level difference between 1000 and 320 metres in altitude, you will come into close contact with the diversity of the local flora.
Thus, when you pass regional road ER 104, you will enter a transition forest, where exotic forest specimens are predominant.
Caminho do Norte ends when you arrive at Ribeira Grande.
Once you are there, take a moment to appreciate the culture of basket weaving with wicker, extracted from the willow tree. It is used as the raw material for making traditional utility baskets, furniture and for building the iconic Monte wicker sledges.
