Madeira Optics Museum

Housed in a 19th-century building, Madeira Optics Museum presents the public with a vast private collection of devices related to the world of optics.

Opened on 7 September 2017, this museum is housed in a building classified as of historical and architectural interest. For this reason, it maintains most of the original features of its façade, even though the building, as well as its surrounding area, has undergone renovation works.

The collection of Madeira Optics Museum is organised around categories such as: telescopes, binoculars, film cameras and projectors, cameras, optical devices associated with scientific areas such as biology, devices used in medicine, military equipment and surveying equipment.

There are more than two thousand items collected from the 1960s to the present day from all over the world. The eclectic collection of the Madeira Optics Museum, which includes objects from several centuries ago, is spread over an area of 150 m², which also includes a small outdoor garden and café area. Finally, be sure to visit the small antique shop at the entrance of the building.
