A Cidade do Açúcar Museum

With a privileged location, the A Cidade do Açúcar Museum is a space dedicated to the memory of the golden period of the sugar cycle on the island of Madeira. This museum was inaugurated in 1996, in memory of a 19th-century Manueline house that belonged to João Esmeraldo and has another peculiarity: it was the temporary home of the famous navigator Christopher Columbus.

The A Cidade do Açúcar Museum houses a set of pieces that mirror social life in the 15th and 16th centuries. The exhibition area of this museum centre includes a fantastic set of Flemish sculptures and paintings, sugar-forms, silver objects, and also an incredible set of artefacts that were collected from João Esmeraldo's house.
