First voyage in hydroplane
Did you know that … the first air connection between Madeira and England took place in March 1949, in an experimental flight of the airline company “Aquila Airways” performed by “Hampshire” Hydroplane, bringing on board high dignitaries, both Portuguese and foreign?
This trip was the starting point of a prestigious regular Hydroplane career between Madeira Island, Lisbon and England that lasted nine years, finishing in 1958 due to financial reasons.
It should be mentioned that, in the early development years of Madeira as a tourist destination, UK visitors arrived to Madeira solely through maritime connections.
