The Funchal bay, thanks to its elegance, is especially fascinating to those who visit the island of Madeira. The outline of the hillside, sprinkled with houses and vegetation, which slopes down towards the sea is, undeniably, one of the best known and most publicised images of this pearl of the Atlantic. This natural observatory is located at Estrada do Aeroporto, on the eastern edge of the parish of São Gonçalo. As it is located 283 metres above sea level, its strategic position makes the view over the landscape that surrounds this site surprisingly wide.
From the Neves Viewpoint you can enjoy a panoramic view over the Funchal bay, but that's not all. From here you can see the Desertas Islands, the name given to the group of three small islands of volcanic origin, located to the southeast of Madeira: Ilhéu Chão, Deserta Grande and Bugio.
