With an exuberant biodiversity and clear waters, the Garajau Partial Natural Reserve is one of the most special places in the island of Madeira, where Nature reigns supreme with all its beauty and serenity. It is in this emblematic area that we find the Cristo Rei Viewpoint.
Located in the parish of Caniço, municipality of Santa Cruz, this observatory offers a panoramic perspective over the natural heritage of Garajau, part of Funchal bay, and also Caniço de Baixo, an important tourist centre. In addition, visitors have access to a privileged view over the Atlantic Ocean.
The Cristo Rei Viewpoint owes its name to the statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus built on this spot. It is an imposing sculpture of Jesus Christ, with open arms, facing the ocean. It was financed and commissioned by counsellor Aires de Ornelas, son of the last majorat of Caniço.
Inaugurated on 30 October 1927, this majestic statue, built at the top of a coastal ravine, is an indelible mark on the scenery that visitors find at the Cristo Rei Viewpoint. Because of its scenic and historical value, this is a must for those who visit Madeira's east coast.
