With an invaluable art collection, the Espírito Santo Chapel is one of the most important historical monuments of the parish of Calheta. For that reason, it is a much appreciated point of interest.
This temple was built in the late 15th century. However, the building would eventually be completely rebuilt some time later, in 1639. It thus has both Manueline and Mannerist features, which make the Espírito Santo Chapel an extremely interesting building from the architectural point of view. Nevertheless, its great wealth lies within.
First of all, it is important to highlight the Renaissance holy water font. The ebony-carved tabernacle with exquisite silver inlays also stands out. It was a gift from King Manuel I to this town. Besides this, the Espírito Santo Chapel has a processional cross, with Manueline features, and also a surprising Mudéjar ceiling, which can be seen in the chancel, as well as in the central nave.
This temple hosts three annual festivities: Holy Spirit, celebrated on Pentecost Sunday; Blessed Sacrament; and Nossa Senhora dos Bons Caminhos, on the last Sunday of September.
